Riding the Blue Line

Miriam came a day earlier than the other guests, so I took her downtown with me on the L. Nothing like a book about cholera to whet your appetite for a tour of Chicago.

Since the Blue Line isn't an elevated train, and the essential Chicago tour requires a ride on a real L, we took the long way across the loop for lunch. It didn't hurt that there was an organic sandwich shopat the other end of the ride.

The next day the other guests arrived. The warm weather was still holding, so we made an evening visit to the Brookfield Zoo. And no, you're not missing someone. That kid in the middle really is a total stranger.

Field Museum

On Saturday we were heading south on Lake Shore Drive on our way to the Museum of Science and Industry when the geeky cousins saw a banner for the Gregor Mendelexhibit at the Field Museum and begged for a change of plans. John made a quick lane change and got us there.

See what I mean? Geeky.
Actually it was a great exhibit. My favorite was seeing Gregor Mendel's copy of Origin of the Species with his pencil notations in the margin. But the whole thing was a wonderful integration of historical documents, contemporary context, and hand-on exhibits.

Here Kati is checking to see if she was right with her guess about what color the peas would be inside the giant pea pod.

The Field Museum has also re-done their dinosaur collection to make it part of a big new permanent Evolving Planet exhibit. The geeky cousins couldn't have been more thrilled to be this close to a genuine triceratops!

Sueis the giant T. Rex fossil that now stands in the center of the Field Museum's main exhibit hall. So of course there now has to be a store for her as well.
Perhaps too many photos

This face isn't quite as good as this one, but you can't really expect a Pawnee earth lodge to engender the same amount of enthusiasm as The Worst Puzzle Ever.
Emma Goldman

What's a vacation without a cemetery visit? On our way back from an essential trip to Trader Joe's, we pulled into the Forest Home cemetery for a quick drive around the gypsy graves and to check out Emma Goldman.
